Brewing Guide: Aeropress

The AeroPress is quite a new and amazing brewing method.

The Aeropress produces a quick cup of coffee that is thick and concentrated but still allows all the coffee’s subtle flavors to be revealed.

  1. STEP 1

    Prepare the Aeropress

Place the AeroPress upside down with the plunger extended to the “4” (see image below).

Place a filter into the cap and rinse it with boiling water. The rinsing removes undesired flavors from the filter and also has the advantage of making the filter stick to the cap.

  2. STEP 2

    Grind

Select your favorite bean and grind it fine – a bit finer than for filter coffee, much like fine table salt – and pour it into the inverted AeroPress.

For the AeroPress, we recommend a 1:13 ratio between coffee and water. So, for one rounded AeroPress spoonful (equal to approx. 0.6 oz/17 grams), you should use approx. 8 oz (220 ml) water.

If possible, always grind the beans just before brewing to retain the aroma and taste.

  3. STEP 3

    Pour Water

When your water comes to a boil, take it off the heat and let it rest for about 30 seconds for the temperature to drop to 195–205 degrees Fahrenheit (90–96 Celsius). Colder water will result in flat, under-extracted coffee, while water that is too hot will result in a bitter and over-extracted coffee.

Pour approx. 8 oz (220 ml) water into the top of the chamber. Give it a stir for 10–20 seconds to ensure that all the coffee is saturated.

Place the black cap with the filter on top of the brewer and screw it tightly.

After 30–60 seconds, flip the brewer on top of your cup and plunge with gentle and steady pressure, stopping when you hear a hissing sound. This step should take another 10–20 seconds. In total, your brew should take 90–120 seconds from pouring the water to the finished cup. But experiment and find the recipe you like best for different coffees.

Please note that water quality has a great influence on the finished brewed coffee, and you should experiment with different kinds of bottled water if your tap water is not good or imparts a strong odor or taste, such as chlorine.

  4. STEP 4

    Enjoy

The most important step: enjoy your coffee.

Read about the coffee and see if you agree with the description and can recognize some of the tastes. Or simply enjoy your brew and send a kind thought to the farmer who made this possible.

  • Where does the coffee come from?

We source the absolute finest coffee beans from the best and most dedicated farmers across the world.

Each coffee has its own characteristic, unique taste, and story to tell, and we are proud to share some of the world’s most amazing coffees with you.

You can see our current offers under Our Coffees.

  • How do you select the coffee?

We select and send you only the best of the best coffee from the most dedicated farmers across the world.

Our top beans are purchased through the Cup of Excellence program, which is the premier coffee competition and auction worldwide, known as the “Oscars” of the coffee world.

  • Do you have Fairtrade coffees?

The “50-50” label is ROAST’s signature branded coffee that guarantees the farmers 50% of the retail price.

The “50-50” label raises the bar for sustainability, guaranteeing the farmers 50% of the retail price (after tax). That is 10 times the fair trade market price. We believe in treating our partners fairly and ethically to produce a better product for everyone.

Find your 50-50 coffees here at ROAST.com or read more about the 50-50 program at www.50-50.org.

  • Do you have any organic coffees?

We love organics and often have certified organic coffee.

But it is also important to stress that it is a complex world and organic coffee and certified organic coffee are not always the same.

Many small, family-owned coffee farms are organic by necessity. They can’t afford chemical pesticides and fertilizers anyway. But they also cannot afford to pay for inspections to achieve certification, and, therefore, they can’t earn the higher price for their beans.

Thus, we support and hope to encourage farmers to do more eco-friendly farming, including getting certified over time.

  • Do you have any decaf coffees?

Sorry, we don’t have decaf coffees at the moment. But we might offer them in the future.

  • What brew method is best?

It depends solely on your preferences.

All our coffees can be brewed with any brewing method. In fact, you might enjoy experimenting by drinking and experiencing the differences in the same coffee with different brewing methods – from espresso to pour over.

  • I don’t have a grinder; can you send me ground coffee?

The best taste and aroma come from grinding whole coffee beans just before making your coffee. But if you don’t have a grinder, we are happy to do it for you.

When setting up the subscription, you can select to receive ground coffee as well as choose your favorite brewing method, and we will make sure to grind it the right way for you.

  • How should I store the coffee?

You will want to protect your coffee against air movement, limit the temperature fluctuations, and avoid exposure to light.

The bags in which you receive the coffee protect it from light and have a one-way valve that allows fresh coffee to off-gas its initial CO2 without letting air in. Therefore, keep the coffee in the bag until just before use.

Don’t store the coffee in the fridge. A little coolness is a good thing, but the fridge humidity is not. Normal room temperature is cool enough.

Only consider freezing your coffee if you plan on saving it for many months.

  • I haven’t received my coffee

Please contact us if you haven’t received your coffee within the estimated shipping and customs clearance time (see above), and we will compensate you for the coffee.

  • I didn’t like the coffee I received

Please contact us and we will compensate you for the coffee and help you change your subscription to your taste preference or cancel your subscription without any costs.
