About ROAST

ROAST is built on our love for great coffee and the belief
that quality and sustainability are closely connected.

quote-open-orange

Quality and sustainability are two vital aspects to our coffee.

Too often these are seen as separated issues where we either pay a higher price for a lower quality or get good quality without the farmers being recognized for their dedication to quality and genuine hard work.

ROAST was built on the belief that there is a strong synergy between quality and sustainability. Fair prices can lead to better quality and better quality can lead to sustainability if the famers are recognized for their work.

Everybody wins.

Bean by bean, we believe that together – the farmers, the roasters, and the consumers can change the coffee industry with both higher quality and more sustainability.

The ROAST Experience: From Bean to Cup

The Beans

We source the absolute finest coffee beans from the best and most dedicated farmers across the world.

Cup of Excellence

cup-of-excellence

Whenever possible we buy the beans through the Cup of Excellence program, the premier coffee competition worldwide. The competition has been dubbed as the “Oscars of the coffee world.” The Cup of Excellence program rewards the farmers who emphasis quality and strive to give the farmers a pride in their product and motivate others. The best beans from the best farmers, and nothing less. Look out for the Cup of Excellence logo on our coffee for the ultimate coffee experience.

The ‘50-50’ Label

The dedicated farmers are our heroes! In an industry focused on quantity over quality, they put their livelihood on the line and against all odds go in a different direction and take pride in producing the best coffee beans. They inspire us and others and are changing the coffee industry bean by bean.

The “50-50” label is ROAST’s signature branded coffee that guarantees the farmers 50% of the retail price. The “50-50” label raises the bar for sustainability guaranteeing the farmers 50% of the retail price*. That is 10 times the fair trade market price. We believe in treating our partners fairly and ethically to produce a better product for everyone.

* After sales taxes and duties. All costs in the origin country and transportation costs to the roastery (including taxes, duties, commissions etc.) are covered by the farmers. Smaller parts of the farmer payments may be given as donations to ACE and similar organisations to help educate farmers etc.

Find your 50-50 coffees here at ROAST.com or read more about the 50-50 program at www.50-50.org (soon to be launched).

Farmer Payment

The Roast

The roasting of the coffee is a vital phase in the process. We roast our beans directly and prominently on our premises to ensure freshly roasted beans, every cup, every time.

Roasting is a vital phase in the coffee process, and when the farmers entrust us the world’s finest beans, that is a responsibility we take very seriously, hence our name ROAST.

Roasting is what gives coffee flavor, and the quality of the flavor is in the skill of the roaster. Every bean is different and for every batch we carefully create roasting profiles tailored to ensure a perfect cup of coffee.

Giesen Roaster
We flame roast all beans by hand on the outstanding Giesen W6 roaster, the same roaster as used in the World Coffee Roasting Championship.

All beans are roasted directly in our shop premises in Copenhagen to ensure freshly roasted beans that can be seen, smelled and tasted by customers. Our Story

ROAST is based on a dream to create a transparent channel for direct trade of great coffee between farmers and coffee lovers around the world.

Andreas Astrup, a coffee enthusiast, started the company in 2014. It was important for Andreas to create a different kind of business. Not just a charity or another coffee roasty with a CSR project. Instead ROAST seeks to create “shared value”, cutting the middlemen, and create an incitement for the farmers to focus on quality and for the costumers to pay the farmers the value of this work.

Today ROAST is located in Copenhagen, Denmark. We source only the best beans form dedicated farmers around the world, carefully flame roast by hand, and ship it right to your doorstep.

Our top beans are purchased through the Cup of Excellence program, which is the premier coffee competition and auction worldwide, known as the “Oscars” of the coffee world.

  • Do you have Fairtrade coffees?

The “50-50” label is ROAST’s signature branded coffee that guarantees the farmers 50% of the retail price.

The “50-50” label raises the bar for sustainability, guaranteeing the farmers 50% of the retail price (after tax). That is 10 times the fair trade market price. We believe in treating our partners fairly and ethically to produce a better product for everyone.

Find your 50-50 coffees here at ROAST.com or read more about the 50-50 program at www.50-50.org.

  • Do you have any organic coffees?

We love organics and often have certified organic coffee.

But it is also important to stress that it is a complex world and organic coffee and certified organic coffee are not always the same.

Many small, family-owned coffee farms are organic by necessity. They can’t afford chemical pesticides and fertilizers anyway. But they also cannot afford to pay for inspections to achieve certification, and, therefore, they can’t earn the higher price for their beans.

Thus, we support and hope to encourage farmers to do more eco-friendly farming, including getting certified over time.

  • Do you have any decaf coffees?

Sorry, we don’t have decaf coffees at the moment. But we might offer them in the future.

  • What brew method is best?

It depends solely on your preferences.

All our coffees can be brewed with any brewing method. In fact, you might enjoy experimenting by drinking and experiencing the differences in the same coffee with different brewing methods – from espresso to pour over.

  • I don’t have a grinder; can you send me ground coffee?

The best taste and aroma come from grinding whole coffee beans just before making your coffee. But if you don’t have a grinder, we are happy to do it for you.

When setting up the subscription, you can select to receive ground coffee as well as choose your favorite brewing method, and we will make sure to grind it the right way for you.

  • How should I store the coffee?

You will want to protect your coffee against air movement, limit the temperature fluctuations, and avoid exposure to light.

The bags in which you receive the coffee protect it from light and have a one-way valve that allows fresh coffee to off-gas its initial CO2 without letting air in. Therefore, keep the coffee in the bag until just before use.

Don’t store the coffee in the fridge. A little coolness is a good thing, but the fridge humidity is not. Normal room temperature is cool enough.

Only consider freezing your coffee if you plan on saving it for many months.

  • I haven’t received my coffee

Please contact us if you haven’t received your coffee within the estimated shipping and customs clearance time (see above), and we will compensate you for the coffee.

  • I didn’t like the coffee I received

Please contact us and we will compensate you for the coffee and help you change your subscription to your taste preference or cancel your subscription without any costs.
